ProHealth Chiropractic Wellness Center is proud to announce the start of their new blog and the addition of their newest team member, Dr. Darrel Asuncion!
Dr. Asuncion relocated from the Finger Lakes region of New York to join the ProHealth team. He practiced in Ithaca, NY offering his services to many people of the community especially those connected with local colleges such as Cornell University and Ithaca College. Dr. Asuncion attended the State University of New York at Cortland, obtaining his Bachelors of Science degree in Kinesiology before pursuing further education and obtaining his Doctor of Chiropractic Degree from New York Chiropractic College.
His knowledge and experience as a Chiropractor can be traced back to his previous days of working in a variety of facilities such as outpatient physical therapy, skilled nursing, rehab and assisted living, and occupational/physical therapy departments in hospitals where he worked directly with post-surgical patients. During his doctoral education, he was fortunate enough to treat veterans within the Veterans Administration. Prior to becoming a Chiropractor, he was worked as a personal trainer within multiple gyms focusing on injury prevention, athletic performance, strength training and weight loss.
Please see our interview with Dr. Ascuncion below:
Why did you decide to become a Chiropractor?
“After being in a fairly significant car accident as a teenager, my Chiropractor was the only person who really made a difference in my recovery. I felt relief from pain, and not having to rely on drugs or surgery was an added bonus because I was an active person and wanted to stay active. As time went on, working at the different healthcare facilities and being a personal trainer, I realized that I wanted to do more for people’s health without pushing prescription drugs (which many people would accept without question). Chiropractic aligned with my values of a drug-free approach to healthcare. Plus, it compliments exercise and nutrition very well.”
What exactly is Chiropractic?
“Chiropractic is a drug-free, surgery-free, approach to healthcare and pain resolution. When we think and talk Chiropractic, we can’t go on without first understanding what controls the body and what encases these structures.
Our brain communicates with our entire body. It communicates by sending signals through the spinal cord, which then is transferred to spinal nerves, which go to every area of the body. The continuation of these nerves end at different parts of the body and control the function of those muscles and/or organs. When we look at the spine, the spinal column houses our spinal cord and protects it, the same as the skull protects our brain.
We, as Chiropractors, look for ‘Subluxations’, which are different than conventional medical doctor subluxations. These Subluxations refer to an area where the nerves that come out of the spine are under direct pressure from a particular structure of the spinal column (your vertebrae which are stacked one on top of another). When we have these subluxations, there is an interference between the brain and the rest of your body which lessens the function of the area in which that spinal nerve normally goes to. For example, when I find subluxations at the top of the neck, I follow up with the patient and ask if they have had any headaches. The reason for this is because the nerves that come out from those areas are the same nerves which wrap around your head. When there is irritation to those nerves, the body reacts, and many people will experience headaches. The same applies for any of the 31 pairs of spinal nerves in your body, and the branches of these nerves which go everywhere.”
What if the problematic areas are located somewhere else, like your arms or legs?
“In many cases, arm or leg pain will be traced right back to the spine. With a thorough history, physical, neurological, and orthopedic examination, as well as range of motion and sensory checks, we can determine where the subluxation is originating. From there, we can treat the condition. If something doesn’t sit right with us, we can take x-rays of a certain area so we know exactly what’s going on (Yes, we have extensive training in taking them and reviewing them!)”
What conditions do you primarily treat?
“The list can go on and on, but most people I see can have any of the following:
- TMJD (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction)
- Neck pain
- Back pain
- Shoulder Injury
- Numbness and/or tingling in hands or feet
- Herniated disks
- “Text neck” as I like to call it
- Hip pain
- Knee pain
Then there are those who just want to stay healthy! Many people also receive care because they want to improve their golf swing, get rid of their tennis elbow pain, for better posture, reach their bodybuilding goals, type comfortably at their desk without carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms, or they just want to be able to play with their grandchildren on the weekends! Does that sound like you or someone you know?”
Dr. Asuncion is excited and passionate about providing care to the community he has joined. Being new to the area, he is looking forward to meeting people and forming great relationships. He is ecstatic to provide his services to the people of Montgomery County.
Please check back in the future as we will be covering specific conditions that we treat, many of which people don’t even know about! If there is a specific condition YOU would like to learn about and how Chiropractic can help with it, please email us or message us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/ProHealthChiropractic
